Citi AAdvantage Annual Fee

I've had my Citibank AAdvantage gold credit card for a year now, so my next statement will include the £25 annual fee. Has anybody been in successful in getting this fee waived, a credit applied to the account, bonus AAdvantage miles, etc? I am not keen on paying to have a credit card, so I think if I can't find a way to have the fee waived, I will just cancel.

Thanks for reminding me! I'd completely forgotten about the annual fee.

Just phoned up Citibank and actually got through to a really helpful guy. He gave me very precise information about dates etc. I'm sure a few people here applied around the same time, so here is the info:

I opened my account in November 2006. My 28 November statement (received last week) has no fee. The guy said that the £25 would appear on my 28 December statement - with the actual debit happening on 28 December as well.

Once your balance is zero, you can phone and close the account. You can pay this month's balance (ask them to add any pending transactions for an up-to-date balance) by debit card over the phone (£3 fee) or do it online for free. As long as payment hits by 27 Dec (assuming you're on the same billing cycle as me) you won't be charged. If you have a direct debit set up, you need to make sure the payment hits Citibank before 24 December to prevent them from taking the DD as well (and putting your account in credit).

I was hoping for the £25 to be waived (he actually asked me 'Is the annual fee the only reason you're closing the account?' and I said yes, but there was no offer to waive).

On to the next one then...
