It's not uncommon for vacancies available to external candidates to have slightly different job titles based on the current market for similar jobs. Roles often have titles that are specific to the internal structural hierarchy, but could be interpreted differently from the outside world.

The job hasn't changed, but you've said yourself you wouldn't have applied if the job advert didn't say manager, this is exactly the reason why some companies do this.
  • Just ask and if you went via a head hunter ask them to ask and the importance, IE a job title is important on a CV. Mr J
went through as many interviews as you did and always does and it happen to him a few years ago and asked for the job title to be changed to ??? ??? a bit of comprimise as they they really wanted him they met him past half way and he was happy with that. They also explained why they could not do exactly as requested which Mr J accepted as it was the way this American co worked.
    Thanks

    Specialising sounds better than managing.

It's the same job, which presumably (as you applied for it) is one you wanted. This says to me that the title change shouldn't be an issue, and isn't an issue overall.

When at work, I am the boss. I don't necessarily always sign e-mails to third parties stating this though, and some contract documents don't list me as 'Director', but list simply my name and 'On behalf of xxx Limited', especially when working with companies larger than we are, mainly as I don't want someone to hesitate on calling me if there's a problem because they think I won't have time to listen to their concerns.

To suggest that you have a right to have 'Manager' in your title comes to me as nothing more than aspiration. If you are happy with the job/terms offered and there haven't been material changes to the job description, why should this be a problem to you?

You’ve handed in your notice and accepted the new job. Forget about this title and get in and demonstrate you were the correct candidate that was selected for the job. Drop the idea if even discussing it again.

Managers have people under them. Looks rather daft to give you such a title when you have one one and therefore no responsibilities as such. I'd be focusing on getting ready for the role than worrying about a job title. You aren't even in the door yet and perceptions of you might already be being formed.
no not all. you could be a engineering manager responsible for managing engineering with no people to manage.......Contract manager who manages contracts and not people etc etc
  • I can see no benefit from the OP querying this any further with their future employer - only drawbacks.

I too have managed an entire function without managing any other employees.  My official job tile seemed to cycle bewteen XXXXXXX Manager, XXXXXXX Analyst and XXXXXXX Supervisor and back again.  Made no difference to me.  (But if I were an employer it might worry me that one of my staff was concerned about this... )
  • So it is the same job (the one you applied and interviewed for) yet they have taken away the title of Manager - and you say if this title was not in the original job description you would not have applied.
I do not think you are right for this role, as the title means more to you than the job spec.
This is how we end up with people badly fitted within the workplace and middle management, due to folk gushing over a meaningless job title, and that being the main attractant
