Employment after furlough

My partner was furloughed from the company he has worked for over 17 years. He then got work on a self employed basis with another company. This company now wants to employ him (PAYE) from 5 April. His old company has now requested his return from 12 April. The new company is closer to home and is a better job. To leave his original company does he need to give notice and work it in order to leave? (he’ll use holiday for the notice). Will he be required to repay any furlough payments? Thanks in advance for any tips!

Yes, furlough is not notice. They can also require him to work the notice and pay the holiday if they want.Should not be required to repay as was a job to come back to but he decided to move jobs (as far as I can tell).1

He needs to give notice per his contract and agree with his employer when he can leave. They may agree to him leaving early as they cannot claim furlough for him when working his notice.1
