How long does a company have to refund me?

I bought two of the same item online from a large chain store in different sizes and I returned the one that didn’t fit.
They enclosed a prepaid return label with Royal Mail the service did not provide tracking but I have proof of postage.
They claim to have not received the return and say they are not legally obliged to refund me until its been received. It’s been 6 weeks since I posted the item back, are they acting legally? How long do I have to wait? I've already contacted Royal Mail who sent me back to the seller.
