EasyJet cancelled flights booked with a voucher

Hello,
I had a flight booked last year for Athens (running the marathon which was inevitable cancelled) and took a voucher refund when the flight was cancelled. I rebooked to Copenhagen in August but now that flight has been cancelled. EasyJet template email said I could have a refund (or voucher or rebook) I selected a refund and they've come back to me and said as I booked with a voucher I couldn't have a refund.

Totally fair really but I thought I'd sneaked a refund off them! I've seen threads where people have advised those with flights to wait until they cancelled and maybe they'll get their money back even if booked with vouchers, looks like a no go with EasyJet though. They've obviously got a step in their refund process to check this!

I've now taken the refund and just remember to book something before a years time (fingers crossed!)

I remain convinced that airlines are legally obliged to refund in cash when cancelling flights (even if the payment was by voucher), unless the customer agrees to accept a voucher instead, although they usually assert that they have to refund to the original method of payment:

However, it's one thing to have rights and another to be able to enforce them....

Indeed it's based on an interpretation of the regulations. But as you point out it does say cash. My own view is that it says cash to stop airlines forcing vouchers on people who did pay with money.

Whether that cash entitlement was meant for people paying with other methods (vouchers/credit).... I'm not convinced.  It wouldn't be the first time a piece of legislation written to mean one thing had side consequences and law is open to interpretation.

Would need someone willing to take.it to court to test it. With easyJet being UK based that is at least an option for someone wanting to try it for a modest outlay.
