Just had to pay £14.75 for a retest (£32.50 for MOT) after car failed on a headlight bracket and handbrake spring. MOT centre did the repairs and the vehicle didn't leave the garage.

Should I have been charged?

    How long before the retest?

    If within 10 days, no.

    Leaving your vehicle for repair

You only need a partial retest if you leave the vehicle at the test centre for repair and it’s retested within 10 working days. There’s no fee for this.

Thanks. About 20 mins. I will contact them as I think they did the same to me last year. Was wondering if they could charged a retest fee if they discount initial MOT cost so even with retest fee I paid less than the max charge of 54.85

How much they charge is irrelevant, so long as they don't charge more than the max fee (or half the max fee for a half-price retest).

Max for a full test fee - £54.85
    Max for a half-price retest - £27.43
Max for a free partial retest - £0

Cheers Adrian. Have emailed them about both charges. I am always happy when my old cars/bikes go through MOT for <£100 so tend not to ask questions

Looks like they got it wrong and from their own website and I quote.

What to do if your car fails its MOT

If your car has failed its MOT, you will be issued with a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’. This will inform you that your vehicle has not passed the test and list the reasons why your vehicle failed its MOT.

You will then be obliged to address the issues listed and carry out any repairs to your vehicle before it is retested. Regarding repairs and retests, there are few options to choose from:

    • Repairs at the test centre – if you have had your MOT undertaken at your local Formula One Autocentre, you should be able to have your vehicle repaired on site. The vehicle can be left at the garage for repair and before the end of 10 working days following the day it originally failed (if not before) for a partial retest. There is no fee for this.
    • Return in 1 working day – if you want to take the vehicle away for repairs, you can then return to the original test centre the next working day for a free partial retest on repair of select items.
    • Return within 10 working days – if you’ve removed the vehicle from the test centre and returned it within 10 working days, a partial retest will be required at cost.
    • Returning after 10 working days – in this instance, your vehicle will require a full MOT retest at the full test price.

    ===============

Ask them on what basis and who did the extra charge and suggest if you wish they are retrained as it makes me wonder if others encountered the same problems and especially if they did it last year as well.

Mr J as as advised by a tyre outfit that he could only replace the tyres on his car that were "original equipment"  and this was by the manager. Mr J did not argue, came home and  quick look on google confirmed Mr J was right that the manager was wrong. It could have cost us hundreds more for the 4 tyres as Mr J went in for a slow puncture repair as this was not possible. Mr J was fobbed off initially by their HQ that the "manager made a mistake,"  - Mr J told them it was a fundamental mistake and HQ said they'd  "retrain the manager."

Are you sure the £14.75 wasn't for the bracket and spring?
