Travelling to Scotland from London for property viewing

I live in London and want to move to Scotland. I need to travel to Scotland (not staying, same-day return) to view properties I may consider to buy.

I wonder how are the current restrictions in both England and Scotland for travelling for the purpose of property purchase?

Activities relating to buying or selling property come under “further reasonable excuses” in the rules for England. Just not sure how it works with Scotland.

Travel for property viewing is permitted so long as you have an appointment to view. Our local property agent (Scotland) will not make appointments with people unless their own property is already on the market .
A house opposite us has just sold to a couple in England, solely based on the virtual tour that was presented online! They have never visited or viewed it in real life. We look forward to meeting them ( from a safe distance) on Thursday when they move in.

Wait and see what the guidance is after 26th April.  Doesn't seem like a legitimate reason for travelling to another country right now.

You can arrange video or virtual tours, get Home Reports etc in advance.
  • Good point about selling existing property, if this is applicable, as remember the house purchasing laws differ in Scotland and once your offer is accepted then you only have a couple of weeks to pull out.

If you are only at the beginning  of your plans to move, I would wait until you can travel there without worrying if you can
by-pass the rules?  Hopefully 🙏 won’t be much longer if people continue to be sensible.
