Tax codes

Hi, I hope someone here can help.
I currently have two jobs and I have just one of them with my personal allowance. Tax code is 1281L. The other is a tax code of BR.  I understand the tax codes. What I don’t understand is why the BR code is deducting 50% of the wage. I’m not a high earner. Approx 21k per year.
I have rang HMRC initially to change my tax code as I was paying emergency tax on my main job. That got sorted. Then payday came and my second job taxed at 50%, spoke to my employer and HR said I had to ring HMRC. So I did, again. HMRC booted me back to my employer saying that the HMRC only issue to tax code. The employer does the rest.

So people, what do I do? I’m trying to earn a bit of extra money and losing 50% absolutely leaves a bitter taste. Can anyone help me with this? I’m pretty useless with tax codes.

You call your employer again, and ask them why they deducted at M1 / W1 50% instead of BR, which is 20%.If they say they just followed the tax code HMRC gave them, you push back and you say, my tax code is BR, you know it's BR, but you did not deduct at BR, and why not...
  • 50% deduction should only happen if you haven't paid enough in earlier weeks/months.

It is probably pointless trying to do anything about it now as the tax year ends in a few days and then the BR code will just deduct 20% (due to it being a new tax year/clean slate).

If you post the figures from your both your latest payslips it should be possible to check how much, if anything, you still owe for the current tax year.

  • Gosh, took me ages to find this post.
    Thanks for the insight.
I will wait now until April payday. Hopefully it will be sorted.
The second job tax code is just BR. No W1/M1 or whatever.
I just had tax back from my main job as they had me on emergency tax code. That’s why I rang in the first place.
Really hope I don’t pay 50% every month. I don’t want to just have one job, I like the variety but if I have to pick one, I will because 50% is ridiculous

Don’t forget that even if too much tax is being taken you will get it back in due course.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
