You stand nowhere.  You employed them for 5 minutes work and agreed the terms.  You now need to pay them.

As above, you employed them, you now owe them.
Unfortuately they probably have 6 six years to chase you through the courts (they're very good at that).
  • right have just recieved a email from them saying that my bank has been in touch with them and told them that the authority i had i had given them was invalid as they could not verify signature, the bank has sent a file to ask that i am happy for ingenious legal to act on my be with my half, now this says to me that they have not done anything with my claim so why should i pay them.

CMCs dont do anything other than send the bank a line on excel spreadsheet with your name and address (with others) or an email or letter with the same asking the bank to investigate the sale.    That is why time and again, people are told not to use CMCs.

The bottom line comes down to whether you employed them or not.   Not the level of work they did or didnt do.

    Because you employed them.

I've got no time for CMC's, but you can't argue with their tenacity for getting funds that are owed to them - they must have to deal with chancers on a regular basis.

What were you expecting them to do other than send a letter/email to your bank?

that’s exactly what you are paying them for.
