Issues with newly fittted windows

Options
Hello everyone.
About 5 or 6 weeks ago, I had two new windows installed by a well regarded local company. As its a Victorian house, I chose vertical sliders (plastic sash) windows.
Basically, the fitters turned up and wanted to measure, I think because the windows which were ordered by surveyor are slightly different sizes (difference of approx 1.5-2cm by height).  I overheard some phone conversations about new windows possibly being needed, but they would fit anyway.
The size difference is despite the fact the windows are next to each other in the same room, facing the street, and so you can tell they are a little different.
Sadly, I think the windows may have been wrongly sized anyway, the fitters once they had removed the existing upvc windows had to cut away substantial parts of the original wooden lintel in both window voids in order to fit the windows (although on the plus side, i get slightly bigger windows). The lintels were basically halved i think, which I am not sure is a good thing in an old house.
I find this all a little strange and wondered if anyone had any thoughts?  I had several quotes, and other companies intended fitting the same sized windows in each.
Thanks

  • Have you gone back to them with your concerns? They shouldn’t have fitted them if they weren’t right. We had several window replaced a few weeks ago, when they arrived they had been slightly mis-sized (due to an office error using rough measures not technical) and the owner came to site immediately. He said that although some of the windows would fit they wouldn’t be right and they wouldn’t fit anything less than perfect. I was really happy with their response and think it was the right thing to do. If the windows were the wrong size they should have taken them away and remade them to fit, not shoved them in anyway.
  • NFG, the two windows that face the street - were the originals the exact same size?

The original sashes had been replaced with standard upvc, looking at photos, I believe the upvc ones removed were the same size.
Also, I had other companies who measured and quoted for this job, and they posted quotes to me for the same windows size for both windows.
I have just been wondering if they choose not to have new ones made, because of the delays manufacturing windows during covid.  Or if the surveyor just couldn't be sure, still find it odd you'd manufacture different windows for ones next to each other.
The fitters are returning on Monday, as i've noticed one of the windows has been leaking at the bottom, I wonder if they suspected there might be problems as it doesn't look like a FENSA certificate has yet been issued for this job.

If they have cut a supporting timber in half, I'd be concerned about structural integrity. Often, these supports are over engineered, but... Have a chat with a structural engineer.

  • Any chance of a photo of these windows - the two adjacent ones - and perhaps some close-ups of the 'cut bits'?
