For speed, can the buyer and the seller use the same conveyancing firm, if the lead conveyancer is different?

You don't cannot put speed and conveyancers in the same sentence meaningfully.

My solicitor advised against this and instead recommended an individual from another practice. We accepted an offer on Feb 5th, exchanged yesterday and complete on 31st March. Quick enough for me.

You must have struck lucky and got a professional. Most are pretty shoddy.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish cliients would walk in a conveyancers shoes for just one day to see the realities of the job rather than this image of conveyancers sitting sipping coffee and not actually doing any work....

I certainly don’t think it’s like this, but the way in which the process works is so antiquated and everything takes so long when in reality there isn’t that much to happen if both parties are organised and on it.  Communication also often leaves a huge amount to be desired

The problem is every, single, transaction is different.  The lender requirements get more and more extensive every few months, there is so much time wasted on  "updates" and "admin"  rather than just letting the conveyancer do the job.  At the same time there is this constant narrative that it needs to be "cheaper".  It's no wonder the profession is at breaking point.

I sincerely hope it breaks right open and has to re-form, and takes the opportunity to leave the lazy, uncommunicative and unhelpful ones behind. The couple that are left stand to make a killing.

I don’t think so. I’ve used a few over the years and found them all to be very good. Understanding the view from their side if the fence is helpful in setting expectations.

And if there are other parties involved in the chain?
