in Credit cards
I have an old credit card with the same bank my current account is with and I moved house in June 2020, I changed the address for the current account but not the credit card because it had to be done separately. When I called the credit card phoneline it kept cutting me off because it didn't recognise the card number probably because it had expired but I still have a balance on it. With the pandemic getting to a branch isn't exactly easy either.
A few weeks ago I received a letter to my new address to say I now need to pay the full amount but with no reason why because the previous letters had gone to the old address. I have a direct debit set up for the minimum amount which has been coming out of my account without any problems for years. So when I spoke to them they said the account went into default in 2011 but for some reason the direct debits restarted and because the address changed it flagged something up on their system. They now want to set the account as a default and trash my credit score which I have been working at to improve and I will need to renew the mortgage in just over 4 years. Can they really do this to me when the problem was 10 years ago and no missed payments on it for years?
I could scrape the money together but then I will struggle for the next few months. It just seems very unfair to suddenly demand me to clear the balance.
Thanks for reading.

If it defaulted in 2011, it will have left your files and therefore not be trashing anything.
Or are you saying you missed payments, but didn't fully default until now?

If it defaulted 10 years ago as they say and they're going to set that as the default date you don't have anything to worry about, it won't show on your credit files.0

It defaulted 10 years ago but wasn't set as a default and somehow the direct debits continued so I've not missed a payment for years. If I don't settle the account in full now they are saying they will mark it as a default now so will be on my credit report for the next 6 years. I just don't understand how they can default it now when it's not in default. Im waiting for their complaints department to call me back.0

If the default was 10 years ago, then that's when the default should be dated. But there's probably more to the story if they want to default it now.
Make sure you check your credit files to see what appears.1
