Online conveyancing when selling

Generally speaking I would always use a local solicitor with recommendations when buying as it's far more complicated of a process so would want someone I know is responsive and nearby. I'm selling and had two offers so it will be going through soon and I'm wondering about saving a few pennies and going with an online fixed fee service. Has anybody done similar and would recommend it or should I just hedge my bets and play it safe?

So how much will you save using an online conveyancing service rather than getting a quote from the local firm you have used before ?
Are you happy speaking to a different person each time you try to contact the online firm ?
Are you happy sending important documents in the post or via email ?
I have used 2 local high street solicitors and can speak to our solicitor about many legal issues
IE house sales, trusts, wills, inheritance tax, stamp duty etc

I used an online conveyancer last time I purchased, no problems at all. Check reviews to make sure you get a half-decent one, I also only consider companies who are members of the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality scheme.
I had a named solicitor in charge of the case, fixed fee, everything was done by e-mail and post. I got quotes from several local solicitors, most of them were slow to quote and/or struggled to provide an accurate quote - wouldn't have used them even if they were cheaper (which they weren't!).
  • I have used the same "online" conveyancer for two properties I've sold and never experienced any issues.

As dj1471's experience, both times I had a named person I could call directly and received at least a weekly update from them. Almost everything was done electronically, except for the contract and TR1 which I had to sign and send back before exchange.
  • Sorry what were the "same online conveyancers" you both used? I've got two quotes from local places now so would be interested to know. The place I've used before have moved it over to Telford and that's a little further than I've rather ideally if I'm going to have to go in person.

I also used an ‘online’ solicitor for my sale/purchase last year. I used MUVE. I know these companies can be a bit “marmite” and you like them or you don’t but I had a positive experience. They were reasonable priced. I had a named solicitor from the start. They were more responsive than the local solicitor my vendor used. So I was happy with them. It suited me being mainly email communication as I could reply around work/kids etc!

Everything is pretty much online now.  Sold 2 houses in last 18 months using Scots solicitor, all electronic plus couple 'phone calls and I think sending one document by mail.

    The world has changed.
  • Thanks all. Really doesn’t seem much difference at all across all the quotes I’ve had both local and online only.
