Help - complete novice! Don’t understand my bill

Hi I’ve moved into a property that was with simplicity before and finally managed to get online with British Gas evolve to see my bill for one mo to is £103! Apparently I used 293kw of electricity and 1,674kw of gas. Does that sound right? We’re a couple living in a small 2 bed house on the simplicity promise deal. It’s fixed until April 2022 but there’s no exit fee so I assume I can switch at any time?

It's been Winter ! expect high bills - might well drop to £40/50 in the Summer.
First look at your bill and the meter readings ? Do they have the letter E against them - that means Estimated.
Read your meter NOW and give readings to BG. You have been giving BG readings every month haven't you ?
If the BG readings are A for Actual - then 300 kWh (kWh not kW) is quite typical per month and the 1700 kWh for gas is probably on the low side
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Thanks they’re actual readings. I read that for a small house we should only really be using around 8000kwh per year so if we look we’re in course for at least 15000 I thought maybe we were doing something wrong0

You wont be using 1700 kWh every month - your heating will probably be switched off next month till October won't it.
Typical 3 bed is 2900 kWh for electric and 10- 12,000 for gasNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Great sounds like it’s not as bad as I thought then. In that case I won’t rush things and I’ll wait to see my usage over the next few months before arranging a switch0

It’s never too late to switch. Always worth looking on price comparison websites to see if you can reduce your unit rate and standing charge hence your overall cost.DarrenHughes said:Great sounds like it’s not as bad as I thought then. I had the same reaction as you that my winter usage was £75/month! Very annoyed but nothing I can do (except not put the heating on and sit in blankets all winter).

You use the word ‘apparently’ so what were your opening readings with BG and what are they now? How long were you with Simplicity and what were the opening and closing readings there?DarrenHughes said:Hi I’ve moved into a property that was with simplicity before and finally managed to get online with British Gas evolve to see my bill for one mo to is £103!
