Replacement Garage Door - Wood vs Metal

I'm at the start of an renovation/extension project on a 1960s bungalow.  It requires pretty extensive work, so I'm expecting a few costly surprises along the way.

The first job I'm getting done is the garage as the roof is leaking (but boards still savable), the window is rotten, and the door is frankly dangerous (original 1965 one, so it's done well).  This will give somewhere to store materials and tools for the work on the house - which is why it's first in line.

I can get a single metal Garador Carlton installed for £550, but have always had wooden before, and one like I have on my current home (Hormann 2013) would be about £1000 more.  I'm not too concerned about the look of it as it's a detached garage and the door isn't visible from the house, but is there any other real disadvantage to the metal door over a wooden one?  I'm sure the £1000 saved will easily find a use elsewhere on the renovation, but don't want to skimp and regret later.

Summary - metal door much cheaper than wooden, but will I have reason to regret it?
Thanks!

where I live the chances are that someone would try to set it alight/break in so metal is better than wood or fibreglass ... Hopefully your garage is in a better area.

I guess it depends on the aesthetics, would a wooden garage door be in keeping with the house/area..? have you thought about an automatic door...?  much easier especially on a rainy winters night..

The one thing I don't like about metal garage doors is they are in my opinion not that secure unless you have auto opening type. But I would say go with what you want & like the look of because if you pick one type because it is cheaper you will want to change it at some point
  • Thanks for your thoughts.  The village is mostly 1960's bungalows, many have had a degree of modernisation over the years to different styles and budgets, so there isn't really a style that would blend in or stand out.  It's in a pretty low crime area, but I'm interested in why metal is less secure.
I plan to take the opener that I've installed in our current house with me, so I'll definitely need something that is suited to automation.

I was half-expecting to hear of issues with condensation on a metal door, or that they are a lot noisier in use, so I'll take it as a positive that these aren't flagged as issues.

So yes, it come down to the question of will I wish I'd got the one I like to look of and change it further down the line, or just move on and be happy with the cheaper one, which only I can decide.
  • The only reason to go 'wood' (ooh-er, missus) is aesthetics.
Metal otherwise makes far more sense - lighter, longer-lasting, far less maintenance, easier to automate, easy to change colour.
Make it retractable rather than canopy for smooooth automation.

Metal - lighter, cheaper, less maintenance.  What's not to love?

Funnily enough, we are in the process of changing our garage door.  We did consider wood, but have decided against that largely because the door gets a lot of direct sunlight and could warp/split over time.
  • Thanks all, good feedback, and this will be west facing, so gets the afternoon sun.  If I'd just bought the house and it already had a metal door in good shape, and if there are no inherent issues with metal, then I wouldn't pay an extra grand to change it, so I think that's my answer.
Good point on retractable vs canopy opening, I found it a doodle to fix my opener on the current my current (retractable) door, so will go for the same.
