Tyre replacement advice

Hi all,

Just had my winter tyres swapped back to the summer set. One of the summers had a bulge so they put the winter one back on that wheel for now. The car drives OK surprisingly. The odd tyre on the front. Car is RWD.

There is 3.9 to 5.5mm of tread left on the summers so not really ready for replacement.

I've done some research and shopping around and think my next set will be Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2. Currently they are Continental Sportcontact 5

Would you

Keep the winter tyre

Replace with identical new summer Continental Sportcontact 5

Replace with new Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2

Replace both tyres on axle with either CS5 or EP2?

thanks!

So you've got badly mismatched tyres on the front - the end that does all the steering, most of the braking...

I'd be making that pair match asap.
Whether you want to just buy one Conti and have a 4mm-8mm tread mismatch, or buy a pair of Goodyears and have a front-rear mismatch (are all four the same size?), or whether you want to replace all four... I leave up to you.

if you're buying 2 x tyres, surely makes more sense to get all-season?
I'm running them on my Polo Gti, and our RR Evoque.
There's literally no discernable difference between summer tyres and these, apart from when it snows and then they're much better than summer only (but maybe a few % worse than full blown winters).
I think all-season tyres will become the norm in any country that suffers from bad winters, it makes no sense to go summer only.
  • Those that mixed the tyres should have known better.
Before we had  4 wheel drive cars we used to change to winter but always update the insurance people.
  • Also, read a trye review site, that's what we do - couple out there have reviews and more importantly from many users and often some people post having tried the tyres for a couple of months.  I think Mr J has tyres called Rainsport I forget the make but they grip like a magnet in the rain and softer ride even i noted the softer ride and he tells me the car grips better than the dunlops he had as original equipment

    Uniroyal.

One of the best mid-range tyres on the market, usually barely more expensive than Chinese teflon-concrete ditchfinders.

thats right and a lot cheaper on line then fitted at a nominated garage.  the dunlops sort maxx or something were too hard we both feel and a lot more expensive these stick to the road like glue.

I second the comment on all season tyres.  I replaced my summer tyres when it snowed and I couldn't get up my road despite having a 4x4 (moved house a few months ago).  Today its started snowing here, after a short spell of fantastic weather - and my car is ready for it!

Best winter tyres ever -  our previous property was in a close, we lived near the top, never noted the gradien as a problem until it snowed, it snowed big time - manged to get home in 2 hours instead of the 20/25 mins and that day soon after we go home roads were blocked. Anyway, the 5 series atuo rear drive, good tyres on it, we stopped near our house before turning in as we did not want to catch the hedge as after all we made it. The car would not move forward. - after trying to push and run it was not worth the risk as going sideways - it was an auto and we;d never been stuck in snow before.  Next day started cursing the car/etc and possibly having to change the car having bought it new 2 yrs before. Then Mr J read an article on Continental winter spor tyres - about 300 a tyre and the b's tried to sell us 4 as "its the law" to have 4 winter tyres Mr J was about to leave the garg they agreed to put on the 2 on the back. I kid you not - it drove better than our friends 4x4. Never took those tyres off and it took on snow that wee we most other rear wheelers and some 4x4 could not manage,

Tyres, make the right choice and you won't get stuck in snow even with rear wheeler auto. Things have moved on since that car as autos are more complexed but good winter tyres can be used all year round are good - tell your insurance and this time Mr J has changed to Uniroyals rainsports they are like glue in the rain and we are guessing not too far off in the snow - got the high speed rating as well but these are not full winter tyres but better than many IMO.
