Bathroom tiling

Hi, I'm in the process of sourcing quotes for some tiling to be done in our (quite small) bathroom.
I've had my first quote and to be honest it seems quite a lot for the time it should take after doing my own research too so was hoping for some advice on that. A photo of our bathroom is below. We are having herringbone around the bath up to the ceiling (10cmx30cm tiles) and then half wall of horizontal tiles (same size) from the wall that the sink and toilet is on and wall opposite the bath. Price includes materials too and we've been quoted £1500.

No we will be removing the existing tiles, having the sink, toilet etc removed (and then replaced after he's finished). He will just be coming in to get started on the tiling.

No tiler likes doing herringbone.  It takes forever.  Like double, triple the time and if the walls are out (they often are), it shows it up really badly.  They don't enjoy it.

I think that is your answer.  Time first, then inclination.

Also, bear in mind that if you have a wall of brick style next to herringbone, they won't line up at all because the herringbone edge cuts are longer than the width of the tile.   It won't look great.
It won't be directly next to the herringbone, herringbone ends at the bath & horizontal starts on the sink wall so there's a bit of wall and a corner between them
  • Can't comment on the quote as I have no idea. The best way to find out is to get alternative quotes.
It will certainly involve a lot of cutting... A larger bathroom probably wouldn't cost much more to do.

Anyhoo, with prices like that, that's why I always go for T&G timber panelling!

As Doozergirl says herringbone is going to be a pain in the arris to do and will look out of sync with the normal tiles ,why not have the whole room tiled normally ,will not cost much more and think how much you will save on decorating next time ,emulsion the ceiling and gloss the door and frame ( i would remove the skirting boards and tile down to the floor )

When I had my bathroom retiled about 18 months ago I paid £200 per day for the guy doing the work, with me providing tiles, & I also sourced & had delivered much of adhesive grout etc which were to tilers preference. It  took about a week & walls were fully tiled with metro tiles &  the floor with porcelain wood look plank tiles. I'd say my bathroom is a pretty average size so hope this gives  you some idea of cost of labour.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

However it would've been nice had the OP returned in the past months to show us how it went. It's alright asking for advice but just as useful giving updates.

Totally agree it would be nice to see the finished job if it has indeed been done yet
