VAT QUERY

I was given a quote for some home improvements at the end of last year, prior to VAT registration.  The company have since become VAT registered and want me to pay the VAT which wasn’t on my original quote. The work is due to start shortly.
Any advice on my rights please? Thanks in advance

You have the right to cancel the job and go elsewhere if you don't like the revised price.

Well if the work has not started and the company has advised you that the end price has changed you have a couple of simple options.

    1. Get the work done and pay the vat.
    2. Don't get the work done
    3. Negotiate a mutually agreeable price and get the work done.

No you don't have to pay it. But equally, if you don't then you may have to take them to court for any difference in price between their original price and the price from the alternative supplier you have to source of this company refuse to perform the contract.

They should have given you certain information (like price, inclusive of any taxes) before you are bound to the contract and they cannot change that information without your express agreement.

Does either party think they're already in a contract? If not then you are free to renegotiate (or go elsewhere).
