Rat (or Mouse) in my kitchen - what am I going to do?

Well, I wasn't sure if they'd completely gone, so I put in the front room, and on a piece of kitchen towel to avoid any mess, a mouse trap with a big dollop of strawberry jam, and all sellotaped onto the trap so to avoid it not going off, they'd have to really wrestle with it.

I did this previously, and they dragged it halfway across the room towards to a hole I've since blocked off. I thought that was it, but I've got wind of them coming back, even though there's never any food left around for them (so why do they return?)

This new trap was in the front room for about 4 weeks without being touched, and along the way, I'd dropped a sweet on the floor, so since they like sweets, from past experience, I just stuck that next to the trap on the kitchen towel.

I come down to the front room today, and it is GONE! The trap is completely GONE.

I've looked all around that front room, and the adjoining rooms, and there's not even a hint of jam left anywhere, so I can't see any trail, nor any obvious holes in the front room where they went before.

So, what in the name of holy hell has happened?!! I'm quite sure I've not gone mad and dreamed this.
