My attitude: I'm happy to do a chain, if it's easy / works out well, but also happy to break the chain if the purchase starts to lag behind the sale. Renting for a bit provides extra flexibility to do some extra work prior to move-in -- e.g., floors, painting, bathroom -- that's harder to do when you're living in a property.
Past a certain point, I find it less stressful to have the certainty that I'll be renting for a bit v. living with the paranoia that someone is in the chain is going to pull out and everything will be back to square one. I don't mind paying a bit extra or sacrificing a bit of convenience for certainty, which is hard to come by in the English property system.
