Online shopping delivery fees

Last night I ordered £30 worth of goods from Debenhams. A pair of shoes at £28 and a £2 pencil case. Delivery charge was £2.99. An hour or so later I received an automated email saying that they could not complete the whole order and could only supply the pencil case. I emailed back (as they do not have a telephone line now) to try to cancel the order ASAP but this morning a response email says they can’t/won’t cancel it and that I should return the pencil case when it arrives. Thus, I’ve ended up paying a £2.99 delivery fee for a £2 pencil case that was simply an add-on to my main order item (shoes). It’s their fault as the shoes were showing as in stock when I ordered them and they are now saying that the delivery fee will not be refunded. Only the £2 pencil case price. I’m so annoyed with them and feel cheated.

They should refund the delivery charge. Query it with them though because I'm doubtful their staff will understand enough about law to realise a contract has not been formed. 

You made an offer. Acceptance has to match the terms of the offer exactly or its not acceptance but a counter offer. So when they said they could only send the pencil case, that was a counter offer that you'd be free to accept/reject.
