No need when a 'single speed' EV can go up to 160mph (Tesla).
Formula-E cars use gearboxes though, so won't be long until a road EV has a gearbox for marketing purposes.

Might make them even more efficient and cheaper to run even if the gearbox adds to the initial cost.
