Wierdest Switcheroo Yet?

So all sellers dread the return that was sold pristine, unopened, perfect that arrives back grubby or broken. Or the switcheroo where you receive the same product but it's a used, faulty or fake one they have sent to keep the shiny new one from you.

What I didn't expect was a new, pristine security camera identical to the one I sent. Except the serial number on both the box and camera were not those of the one I sent! I photograph everything I dispatch - and video opening any returns. He hadn't even taken the Argos sticker off his product's box - I got mine from Amazon.
I suppose it could have been an innocent mistake, if he had several ready to install and decided to return one. But his change of mind return said it 'wasn't what he was looking for'.

Of course I'll have to refund and class myself lucky I have the switched product (tested working) to sell on. I just wondered if anyone has a theory on what he's up to?

Or he bought  a few, from different sources, for a project which didn't happen and accidentally mixed them up when he was returning them?

Like you say op, could well be an innocent mistake.
I've actually done this myself by complete accident - bought a number of same item (hue lightstrips) of which I'd bought one too many, and one had the amazon sticker on it still and he's bought his elsewhere without any stickers. He questioned it (fair enough) and I put my hands up. He was fine with it since item was still sealed. Oops though!

Thanks. Still suspicious that he felt the need to fib about the reason for return.

Next puzzle is whether I press the eBay "Issue Refund" button. Because he bought his own postage and didn't enter tracking, eBay don't know it's arrived. If I just  "Issue Refund", would I not get fees refunded? There seems to be no option for the seller to 'Mark as returned' on app or desktop.
