Smart meter with different providers

We have Electricity with Eon Next. We have gas with SSE. This came about as the gas supply is new. There had never previously been a gas supply to the house. We had that done by Cadent, and they will do the meter cupboard but not the meter. Eon said they don't supply gas meters, so went with SSE, as they were able to do it at short notice and all been fine since.
Now, SSE are pestering to install a smart meter. I've no real issue with this. When I was on the phone to Eon, to change tarriff as we had night storage heating removed, when the gas heating went in, they said that SSE cannot fit a smart meter, as they only supply gas. I triple checked that I understood what she was saying. She was adamant that in a case where you have two different providers, only the one who does the electric, can put in a smart meter. And that obviously, is only for the electric.
Does anyone know if this is correct? Does anyone have two different smart meters?

Yes that is correct. The smart gas meter needs to connect to the comms hub which is attached to the electricity meter so it is not possible to just have a smart gas meter without having a smart electricity meter.2

That's great. Thanks for the clarification. I will switch to a single provider at some point in the very near future.MWT said:Yes that is correct. The smart gas meter needs to connect to the comms hub which is attached to the electricity meter so it is not possible to just have a smart gas meter without having a smart electricity meter.0 -
Do check to see if separate suppliers are cheaper. A lot of people have discovered that a single supplier for both is more expensive.1

That's not totally true. In the SMETS2 world you can have a Comms Hub without a Smart Elec Meter, so technically you can have a Comms Hubs, SMETS2 Smart Gas Meter and a 'Heritage' Elec MeterMWT said:Yes that is correct. The smart gas meter needs to connect to the comms hub which is attached to the electricity meter so it is not possible to just have a smart gas meter without having a smart electricity meter.Honest? Probably......sort of.0 -
Don't think that's true - a few Utility Cos. ago, my then gas supplier wanted to fit a Smart meter. When I said that I still had a standard leccy meter with another Company they lost interest as they couldn't commission the meter.jackandcoke said:

That sounds like a worthwhile avenue for those who wish to be smart meter avoider's to explore.
Well except for the obvious,no thank you,do one please response.1 -
It's not common but a few suppliers do it. There is a bit of equipment called a 'Hot Shoe', that allows you to power the Comms Hub from the Elec Meter without them being connected together. It was designed it situations of split suppliers or if the customer customer still had a Heritage Elec Meter.MWT said:jackandcoke said:
