    There's nothing to stop them promoting Direct Debits and smart meters in this way.  Many other companies do the same, e.g. charging more if you don't pay by DD and restricting their cheaper tariffs to those who agree to have smart meters.  You can't even sign up to some tariffs if you already have a smart meter.
    All that's slightly unusual is that you only get one bite at the cherry.
