A claim for ‘new style’ can be made but it is a contribution based benefit and nothing will be payable unless there is a complete NI record for the two tax years 2018-19 and 2019-20. You also cannot claim if entitled to SSP.Scotch_Bonnet_ said:..she said ...I can't make a new claim for ESA. I tried to tell her I have my letter than I have to shield and so made the application on that basis. She didn't want to know.
The current position is that ESA can be claimed by those who have been advised to shield (but this will no longer apply after the end of the month). See https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowanceYou can apply for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) if you have a disability or health condition that affects how much you can work.
You may also be able to get it if you cannot work while you are self-isolating or ‘shielding’ because of coronavirus (COVID-19).Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1
