A mix of both, saving money is very important to me and I think why pay more when there is no need to?
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!

It's a bit of both for me.

With HM foodstuffs,at least you know exactly what's in them, which is a major factor for me.
Same here - I have to be extremely careful what I eat - no hidden gelatine, or I'll be very ill! And DH likes his food to taste nice, so he prefers what I make myself to ready-made.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

It is for satisfaction and to save money. The latter isn't strictly a necessity, lucky for us, but i don't see the point of spending more than i have to. I have meal planned since i first moved into a shared house where we took it in turns to shop and cook on a limited, student budget and the habit stayed with me. (that and the fact that Mum used to drive me mad saying "what do you want for dinner tomorrow" just as you finished todays!:))

The only problem with HM food is that nothing is ever as nice so i can't buy ready made food anymore cos i don't like it!! :rotfl:

And if we do eat out, it either has to be a bargain using vouchers or rewards or something, or VERY nice, or i order something i just wouldn't cook at home (can't think of an example now) cos anything i (or OH) would make at home will always be much nicer.

Even my kids (15 and 12) now realise that, on the whole, HM is best and so choose not to use MaccieD's or BK or whatever

Also i like creating things, when i was at school I thought i wasn't very artistic or creative because i can't draw, but it was never recognised that the cooking, sewing and knitting - even doing jigsaws - i was constantly doing are all creative things.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Its more wanting to spend my cash on what I really enjoy which is my family and grandchildren My DD and her OH work full time and have five children andif I can help to make their life a bit easier then I will. They are very good to me and we are a close-knit family who all help each other out.I go away for a fortnight in August with Tess,Simon and the tribe and we have a great time .Very old-fashioned by a lot of standards, but the younger ones especially love doing fishing on the beach or clambering around rock pools and getting thoroughly wet and muddy Gran(me) sits with the big picnic serving which ever child needs feeding from our large picnic on the beach. One of the older ones Ben (15) loves 'proper fishing' and my DD goes sea-fishing with him in a boat out in the Solent whilst the three younger ones and Granny and Dad usually fly kites or play ball games. In the evenings we have board games or cards which all the children join in with The eldest(Katie) is usually off with her fiancee somewhere. We rent a house for all of us and usually try to get the biggest one we can find so my other DD can come over to the Isle of Wight to visit with her family, then we have 10 sometimes 11 of us to a big BBQ.every extra penny I save during the year goes towards our family holiday which we all look forward to immensely. We save collectively our Tesco vouchers which help with the first big shop we do when we get there .Last year we had £220.00 in vouchers which went a long way towards the food bills which can be quite large as there are a lot of us.I take a day off to carry on my genealogical reasearch into my late OHs family who were islanders for at least 8 generations that I know of so far.Or if I want to just put my feet up and have a read in the garden for the day then I do.Its a very relaxing time for us all and worth every penny that we scrape together between us.This year especially has been a worrying one as my son-in-law's not sure how long his job will last and if he will get another one in a different department .So roll on 8 weeks this Sunday then two cars take off for our annual trip to the Isle of Wight. No hanging around airports or changing money OK so sometimes the weather could be better, but last year we only had one rainy day out of 14 and we trooped off to the pictures for the day then.So all my spare cash goes on what I enjoy instead of lining supermarkets pockets .Works for me anyway

Bit of personal satisfaction, saving money, but also to know what we're eating (home made) and to try to teach the children (by example) the "old" ways of doing things. Much like my mum and grandparents taught me.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Lovely, thanks for all your replies, its good to see other people's views on this.

I plan to try making some home made butter and bread this weekend purely for my own satisfaction to see if I can do it.

Blow the cost this time. :D

ps. however, it will really only be for satisfaction because I always buy the whoopsied sliced bread and freeze as much as I can and this is the cheaper option for me, I just don't have the time to make the amount of bread I would need for the week to make not buying it in economical iykwim.

For me its just a habit thing tbh. I was very very skint when I was 19 and a single mum so learnt to be frugal and often go without. As a result I never seem to enjoy spending money now even though it isn't an issue anymore, I just keep seeing stuff and thinking "How much?! I'm not paying that!!"

It's a bit of both for me. I used to spend money without looking for best deals, etc. Then I joined MSE. Now I find trying to be OS very satisfying and it frees up money to save, for other things.

This year I am growing my own veg and I get real sense of satisfaction from it. Cooking wise I have always cooked from scratch since we had our children. I am now much more aware of food waste and I use up leftovers where as in the past I would have binned it.
