For me its a choice, and its important to me as it gives me independence. When i was younger it was independence from my parents (I cut myself off financially at 17 and its made a huge difference to my life and career), now its independence from the banks and to some extent from the winds of fortune. My parents are not at all frugal and I can see it causing them stress as they near retirement.

I'm not sure that I'd be what people think of as old style - I have a very international life, but value my old style skills (watch me cook, crochet and read my way to happiness :)) and try to live as frugally as I can. I am living in Africa at the moment and am acutely aware of how fortunate I am to not only be solvent, but to be healthy, educated and from a culture that valued me as a girl.

    Hi
I am old style because I love my family to have good food and this can only be achieved by making it from scratch, I believe. I love transforming plain ingredients and making them into lovely food. My job is as a full time mum and housewife now and I see it as my responsibility to use our resources, both financial and otherwise, as wisely as possible. Frugal is my favorite word lol and I sew, paint, garden, cook and create with this in mind. I do like lovely things and our home reflects this, I think, but I spend as little money as possible achieving this. My friends think that I spend loads on our house, but I always tell them that I don't. I maintain our things and look on housecare/ familycare as a career now.

    Hi,

I just wondered if I could ask a question as I follow this board quite a bit.

I was recently reading about making your own butter because of the rising costs and I immediately thought, yeah, brill another good thing for me to try but when I went to buy the cream to do this myself, I couldn't even get a cheap whoopsied cream! I would have had to pay around the same amount for the whoopsied cream as I would on a bogof butter, plus I got more for my money in the bogof, so unfortunately common sense prevailed on this occasion.

I just wondered if most people on here did things old style mainly because of the personal satisfaction it gives you to make your own or because of the costs involved?

    Hi ally,

This recently updated thread should give you an idea of the many reasons why people choose an Old Style way of life:

  • It's a bit of both for me. It's more about self reliance I think.

It's a bit of both for me.

With HM foodstuffs,at least you know exactly what's in them, which is a major factor for me.

A bit of both for me. Right now though it is a neccessity if I want to take LO to Peppa Pig World, it's costing me a fortune and a half so cutting back as much as possible is a needs must right now.

Generally it is about having to but also for saving as much as I can. I want to get used to this lifestyle so that when I do have a bigger income I'll be so used to this way and knowing I can do it so much cheaper that I won't want to spend the extra money meaning I AM able to save for the future :)

Because about twelve years ago had I not had a very simple frugal lifestyle when bringing up my kids, I would have gone under financially. Time goes by and the children grow and are 95% educated. During that time my earnings have risen and I'm generally better off. But equally better off for having scrimped and saved a bit over those years. I won't get more than the basic state pension and don't have much longer to work (although many more years than I signed on for when I started working) so I am anxious to save as much as possible to give me a few options later.

The other thing is you never quite know what's round the corner so I think keeping the OS and frugal skills well honed is the best defense you've got.
