Hi
Many thanks for posting and i hope that you come back and post on here again:) evryone is really helpfull on this bord and there is a real matey feel about it all.
For me im nspired by WW2 and also a bit of the Good life. But also there has been for a few years now a tred of getting back to the earth. More people growing there own keeping chickens and eating organic and fair trade food. People wont and need to feel conetced with the land and most of all with each other somthing modem life dose not offer. More and more are wonting to lead the good life and just be part of life again:) to eat real food to be with real people.
Its not all about the money saving its about living:j:j:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -
i could not agree more with halight
its about living
i decided to "get out of the rat race"
one night, split decision
and i did it
i wanted the simpler life
and i have never looked back
its not about money for us, i am lucky to be able to live like i do
i couldnt give up my GHDs
please dont make me:o0 -
I find the whole home baking, sewing clothes and just general old fashioned and thrifty skills fascinating.
I could not give up my books! I have a collections of books ranging from 1830's to 1960's which I love. Oh and my Georgette Heyer collection. I know a television is a luxury but I adore watching old shows and anything traditional and the BBC dramas. Lately I have been watching Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons.
There is probably a lot that I could give up really. I watched a programme about the Amish and they live so simply and yet are so connected with each other and nature and seem so content. They don't seem to strive like we do for the next new must have.

Just to add,
Its also about the life skills. There are millions of men and women that really can not even do the everyday things that our grand farthers and grand mothers did.
You might have a very high paid job and can aford to buy new not repair and get evrything alredy done but what happend if you lose your job and the money runs out, What happend if the Gov bracks done and you can no longer buy what you need?? You need to know how to do things yourself.
The old stlye daily thred is great why dont you start reading it everyday and if you feel able take part and post on it too when you are ready.
Please do come back and get to grip with it all, You will be very glad you did!!!!!!:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -
you put it very well Halight:T
it is about living and being happy and healthy and content with your lifestyle and the simpler pleasures in life.
I remember on The Good Life when Margot's christmas wasn't delivered but they all had a fab time at The Good house which cost nothing. Jerry said it was 'real food' - thats the type of life I want - the 'real' things.Do what you love :happyhear0 -

If you can aford the things you love then you dont need to give them up. Living in the old style way/the good life just means that you add a little bit of living to your life.
You only need to give up what you can not afford.:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -

I don't really have to give anything up. I want to though as I want to have some savings behind me for the future and security.
I feel like I have got used to having stuff everywhere and I want to focus on the important things and to live a simpler life. I don't love everything I have and that is the problem, I buy things on a whim or to cheer myself up.
Plus I want to learn to sew, bake, grow food and make quilts. Skills that I don't have but I want. I just want to stop being so materialistic and shallow!

Your aspirations are commendable and you have found a like minded crowd in the OS Forum. No one is born knowing anything, we all have to acquire knwledge and skills and learning OS ways are most definately achievable, so don't ever be discouraged that there is so much to learn, instead look upon it as a great big adventure. I'm still learning, and i hope i go on learning until the moment i stop breathingGrocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

I think it's all about needs and wants, and each one is individual. Some have the distinction made for them by economic circumstances. Some make lifestyle choices. Others have a life changing event and their assesment of needs/wants alters.
What I feel is a need, others may view as a want. My 'basics' are someone else's poverty or luxury.
Luckily, I am able to make choices as to need or want, 80% of the worlds' population do not, they are still at the bottom of Maslows diagram of needs.
Modern 'old style' living for me is a re-assesment of my needs and wants and how to acheive them in a way I find satisfying.
Our forebears have many lessons to teach, some I may adopt, some I may adapt and some I may reject.
I make choices, hoping to grow and live happily and securely.0 -
For me it's the ability to make do and mend when others would fail if they didn't have their everyday 'essentials'. Also, I'm interested in history and love to be able to do things the way they did in the middle ages, for example.
I find it fascinating to see how things pass through the ages, and are not always better in the modern world! My friends always tease me that if there's ever a war where people need to know which herbs to pick and eat or what your natural remedies are, they're going to come and live with me! :rotfl:
The things I couldn't do without? My car - it's an old BMW, but it works without fail and does thousands of miles every year. I would be very isolated without it as our bus times are rubbish and the train only runs from the next village. Oh and my books, I love to read
What could I do without? The TV and the constant, incessant media hype about people or events which really have no bearing on our individual wellbeing. For goodness sake, what does it matter what Katie Price does? That people can actually care about things like this, is amazing to me
