Oh and in terms of food, taste and quality are two of the main reasons for cooking from scratch.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I've been a Stay at home Mum for the last 3 years with my lovely boy and we are TOTALLY broke. I've done part time work but money is VERY tight so until he starts school in Sept we are on an even bigger than usual economy drive. however, I HATE what my utilities and food bills have become and want to beat the big guys, so it makes me feel better to save money and not line their pockets so much.
I also love to make cards/decorative and clothing items and sell them and it's all recycled stuff, I find it so satisfying. I like to think the time I've spent with my little lad has meant more to him than the expensive gifts we couldn't afford to buy him. I know I remember the things people did with me when I was little rather than the toys i had.

I was wondering what made people turn to OS-ing?
For me it was more about knowing what goes into my food then saving money although thats an added bonus. I had a huge health scare which made me start searching the internet for alternative treatments and came across a very strict organic vegan diet which helped some cancers. Thankfully I was given the all clear but the experience made me think about my diet.
Whilst i dont always eat organic produce (rarely do to be honest) at least by cooking things from scratch i know whats in my food.
What made you turn to OS?

I like old style because, it's healthier, cheaper and also reminds me of a childhood that I doubt that my children will experience. A bit of thrift was great when we were young as when something good happened you enjoyed it. I also like the old ideals about recycling and saving up for something before you buy and being OS, helps me save money.0

Because people/media make you feel guilty if you buy anything in a packet, so I hang out here to look cool.
I also begrudge the high prices for really simple things that can be easily made at home.0 -
Don't really know any different as I was brought up to utilise every scrap of food available. Most folk of my age do it as a lifetimes habit as we have never known what its like to waste stuff.Even my old Mum used to say 60 odd years ago that to throw food away was to feed the devil:eek: have picked up some good tips along the way whilst I have been on here for the last five years0

Finances, health (like to know what we eat and minimise extra additives etc), I enjoy cooking/baking/knitting/craft etc, environmental concerns.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Initially, I started to save money to clear my debts then overpay my mortgage. Now both are done, my reasons are:
- I like to know what my family are eating.
- I refuse to be suckered into buying brands just for the sake of it.
- I like the idea of eating well but inexpensively.
- It gives me an excuse to grow my own vegetables, home-cook and keep chickens.
- I hate having cupboards full of cleaning products that I simply didn't use.
- I like the fact it saves us money for more fun things.
- ..and purely because I enjoy it!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Why I OS:
- My parents grew up during the war with rationing, shortages, austerity etc
- I grew up in the 1960s (born late 1950s) when credit didn't exist & people lived simpler lives so 'luxury' was a bottle of pop once a week!
- I was in Uni in the 1970s when there was no such thing as a free overdraft, so I expected to be broke all the time & not own anything of value. It was cool to be skint
- when I married we saved up for a mortgage deposit just like everybody we knew, it was hard to borrow money
- when we finally bought a house the 80's recession hit
- then we had three kids.....
the rest is historyI can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0
