I was born and grew up during the 1940-50s so I have never been any other way.I am just too darned mean to give my cash to the big stores.I enjoy shopping around and finding ways in which I can make my cash go further:j .
When I married in 1962 my husband thought it a hoot that I kept a little red note book with all my housekeeping written down in it lists of stuff to buy and how much everything cost. Over the years I still keep a little red note book and have filled many of them.
My eldest DD is 40 this year and she too keeps a little red note book and is a good and careful manager. I would rather spend my cash on something nice like a holiday or something for my grandchildren, or even the occasional bottle of gin than give it away to a food shop unesessarily(sp)
No, I just think I am too darned mean full stop:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
To me it is an enjoyable and satisfying way of living our lives.
Enjoying time in the garden, growing our veg, enjoying mushrooming, blackberrying etc, enjoying walking instead of taking the car.
Satisfying in knowing you always have something at hand to make a good wholesome meal, and doubly satisfying watching our savings grow and also enjoying those savings, as in wonderful foriegn travel and best of all early retirement for both Hubby and I.
All of this being possible simply by looking after our money and making every penny count.( Oh and being laughed at by various people over the years for our "strange" ways.!!!!)Away with the fairies.... Back soon0 -
As a full time working mum i find it has allowed me to make my life easier! a montly meal plan and 1 monthly batch cooking day allows me extra time with my son on an evening, its cheaper quicker and involves no real thought!
I just now need to be a bit better at the housework OH thinks the Laundry fairy has resigned!Only two big facts are known for certain: you are on a large, spinning rock hurtling through lonely space at about 67,000 mph, and one day your body is going to die. Will a new pair of shoes really help?
Weight at lightbulb moment 13 7lb
goal for Christmas 12 7lb! :rotfl:0 -
This is fascinating and quite thought provoking! I think for me it was economy (7); ecology (10), healthy living (7)... But now I am coming to the end of maternity leave, have an extra mouth to feed and no money, I think economy has gone up to 8-9!
I think for me personally a lot of why I choose to live the way I do is motivated by my faith in God, and I find that a lot of the values I am learning about and trying to live by actually relate to "OS" living too...0 -
Morning all! Despite being a regular to MSE on the DFW boards I am a relative newcomer to O/S & being a nosy so and so wondered why people are o/s? For me trying to be o/s began from necessity of being a DFW (10 down, 27 to go lol!) but also realising how much I used to waste before so now I save money on some bits means I now (a) pay more debt off (b) enjoy the challenge & (c) get to know a lovely, helpful bunch of innovative people better (d) get educated & (e) get the same buzz from saving dosh that I used to get spending it.
Was curious as to why others are o/s? :rolleyes:Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -
hi, and welcome to Old Style!
i do it because i enjoy it
i love the satisfaction of baking my own bread, biscuits, meals from scratch, as i know exactly what i'm putting into them
i mainly started being "old style" out of necessity, trying to survive on benefits with 2 teenagers, but now i'm in the swing of it, it's just second nature to me now
i automatically add vinegar to the final rinse in the washer, and i can't remember the last time i bought a loaf of bread ( probably beginning of last year i think)
but i have to say , i love being old style0 -
I also am please with the satisfaction of making my own food.
I enjoy it when others appreciate my hard work.
I have an impromptu dinner for my parents tonight and have scoured my cupboards and have made a quiche, some salad in the fridge and will put the breadmaker on later for olive and tomato bread... so out of my cupboards I have made a meal.
I also cant remember the last time I bought a lof of bread and have found my grocery bill has come doen dramtically as when I used to pop into the supermarket for a loaf I would come out with a load of impulse buys..
All I need to do now is get a cow and I would need to go for milk :rotfl:0 -
Isn't it funny how we mainly all start out of neccesity and then continue because we love it!
Since I became old style many years ago, simply because I didn't have any money in my purse and three toddlers to feed, things have moved on and although im still old style, the quality of our food and meals is far superior to what my rich friends eat.... even though they shop at Marks.
I can't think of much in life finer than tucking into homemade scones smothered in blackberry jam that you made from the blackberries you picked for free the day before!0 -
I love growing my own veg, baking my own bread, having the little one saying 'is it home made or out of a packet, as the packet stuff is too sweet' [you heard it here folks], and feeling that I am not being as duped by the big stores as they would like to think.
Home made Yorkshire Puddings, a delight to behold [thanks Delia]. They're so big you could serve the full meal on them.
I am not OS when it comes to gadgets - I love my iPod, and my MAC; but we'd rather have Twink's HobNobs any day.
P.S.; I didn't start out of necessity; it was the cheek of Tescos trying to take over the world, and seemingly succeeding that made me angry.0 -
Started as money-saving (and was mainly focused on cleaning stuff) but I've continued and got deeper and deeper into OS because I quite simply enjoy it. I like making our own meals (much tastier than the supermarket versions), being able to use up leftovers, I have just started hand making my own bread thanks to this site (DH would like to say thank you too as he loves it) and this year our veg will come from the garden.
We still buy wine etc but I'm quite interested now in home brewing and cheese making so we will continue to get more and more OS I think. As Zazen says it's quite nice to think that you're giving the big supermarkets a metaphorical poke in the eye!"All cruelty springs from weakness" - Lucius Annaeus SenecaPersonal pronouns are they/them/their, please.
I'm intolerant of wheat, citrus, grapes, grape products and dried vine fruits, tomato, and beetroot, and I am also somewhat caffeine sensitive.0
