I have really enjoyed reading the replies on this thread
For all those who have 'converted' and are enjoying being Old Stylers ...:T :T Well done on your achievements!!!! :T :TSharifa - we have a number of male Old Stylers tooActually, it's another sign of the times that there are more and more men who are either living alone or who are taking on more and more of the domestic chores because their wives/partners are also out working, or even *choosing* to do more on the home front because ... they enjoy it!

I love cooking, but had never really been that OS until last year.
I have to admit Im slipping back into non-OS ways more and more and this is due to time constraints than anything else. I just dont think we are organised enough any more that we used to have. Im not at the RM stage again but have bought a few yellow label premade pasta sauces and bits recently. I wont pay full price for them thoughI do feel a bit disappointed when I do this, eating something which i just term as "wrong" the other day in sains I did a "big shop" didnt get home till 8, and had bought a reduced pizza which we had with other snacky bits (breaded prawns, not HM G bread) and I just said "that wasnt great was it". I bought non stardrops cleaner the other week, as our house really needs a dose of commercial cleaner - having persevered with SDrops for months, the spray did get the kitchen much cleaner. ( we moved into a rented house that was utterly foul when we moved in and iv never got it clean enough for me)
As we are moving into thinking about having LO's I want to be MORE os than we are now, but thinking about how we'd find the time is baffling! if we are both working which we would quite frankly have to do. However, Im hoping to find a way where I can make OS a career, altohugh its all still in the planning stages! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

That's really good to hear - perhaps it says more about me than them that I'm more surprised by OS men than women!0 -
I have fallen off the wagon BIG time LOL (3 chinese takeaways in one week  )
Just trying to climb back on and it's made me think a lot about why I love the OS ways so,
When did you go OS, why and would you go back ??0 -
There's a lovely thread currently running titled: "Is OS a habit for life?" which addresses just those questions
It's an interesting read

Hi newbiemum,
As well as the thread that Queenie has linked to we also have a thread on 'why are you Old Style?' so I've merged all three threads to keep all the replies together.

Im old style because I think its a healthier way of life really. I cook from scratch partly because of saving money but mainly due to the fact I want to know the ingredients in my food!0

I'm OS for economy purposes. If I can get away with not spending unnecessary amounts of money on convenience foods/harsh cleaning products etc and end up with tastier meals/the ability to cook/a clean house without the need for chemicals (which inevitably bring on my asthma) then bring it on!
I think cooking and cleaning and sewing etc are skills which seem to be getting dissapointingly lost on the newer generations. My mother gave me a good start teaching me how to bake and sew and my cooking skills are coming on slowly but surely but I'll definitely be trying to share my wisdom when I have kids of my own.0 -
Hi,
After reading the threat about fussy eaters I'm wondering how many of you grew up in an OS environment? I'm just really surprised... I grew up in a family of four. My mum, dad, sister and me. My sister is four years older than me so we weren't very close (think she thought I was embarrasing or something). I don't know whether it is because my mum is Dutch or something else but we always ate breakfast and dinner at the table.
My mum would cook everything from scratch (unless she was really pushed for time) and we were told we could eat what she put in front of us or go hungry. It did result in me sitting at the table till ten at night one time, but other than that it seemed to work. I think what's even more surprising is that my mum turned the whole family vegetarian and health foodie. This meant we were eating stuff our friends at school hadn't even heard of. But we never argued. Now I'm nearly 23 and there aren't really any foods I don't eat. There are some things I prefer (naturally) but generally anything that's put in front of me (especially if I've not had to cook it) I'll eat.
I don't really know what this is down to but I'd be curious to see what other people think. Whilst at uni I also noticed that lots of my friends just didn't have a clue about cooking whilst I seem to have picked it up without a problem. I think that was down to be sitting on the work top whilst mum cooked. But I don't really understand why the people I went to uni with would survive on rustlers/pizza/super noodles. Urgh. Anyway... just thought it'd be interesting to discuss and see if anyone else out there grew up the OS way.
redcherry.
P.S we didn't grow up the OS way in other respects as money was never a problem, but only because my dad was away on business all the time... sadly.0
