I think it would be hard not to be, its how I was brought up. I have so many happy memories or child hood and my myum making things and I just hate waste!Me debt free thanks to MSE :T0 -
Well, This is an interesting but difficult question to answer. Very thought provoking!
I recently bought my own flat, have decided to return to university and have tried to prioritise what in life is most important to me. I have tried to cut back economically, rather than cut out and discovered what I spend my money on. So much went on food I was astounded. I love to cook and although I'm not great I am definately getting better. Old Style gives me the chance to do something I love, while benefitting my purse.
It has also made me look at how I occupy my time. I am more inventive now and willing to give something a shot, like painting an old bit of junkshop furniture rather then buying an expensive new piece. Plus it gives me a hobby and a sense of achievment that you can't get from shopping.
I also love the fact that I am not being taken in by shops and retailers anymore. Thats a great feel good factor! SO my ratings are;
Economy - 10
Health - 8
Ecology as initial reason for old style - 3
Ecology as result of old style - 8
Feel Good Factor - 8r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
I guess I first started looking at old style because I'm tight (sorry, what do we call it now, elegantly economic
) I got really into it before Christmas when I started to make my own gifts. As time has gone on I've really apprieciated the health benifits (exept for a bad back I've had no colds, flu or other ailments since Xmas), I now realise (because of this site) how bad for you ready meals are and how much I enjoy cooking. I also love the reactions (doesn't everyone) when someone actually enjoys something you've cooked/ made for them and I enjoy that everyone comes to me if modern solutions don't work/are too expensive to find out an old style solution. I think I'm more mellow since joining because I'm no longer still in debt in April because of Xmas and only just getting back on my feet before it all starts again because of holidays then xmas again. I can live within my means and budget and I love it
My reasons have changed as old style has grown with new different peoples opinions and suggestions so thanks to everyone for contributing and making old style what it is :T

Economy has to be the main reason for my choice, as we have always wanted me to be available for the children.
For the past 8 years we have home educated as well, which really cuts out any chance of part time work.
Also I figure I can probably save almost as much as I could earn by living the old style way.
So:
economy 10
health/quality of life 9
ecology 9
simply for the fun of it 10
ie would I like to be stuck in an office on a sunny day?
Also my dh feels lost if he has to come home to an empty house0 -
I suppose for me it started out as Economy, but has grown to including all the others:-
Economy: 9
Health: 8
Ecology: 8
Enjoyment: 9
I know I could do more, but for the moment we're happy and enjoying life, which afterall is the main thing.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
Lily contracted Strep B Meningitis Dec 2006  Now seemingly a normal little monster.

I've just spent every penny I will earn for the next 25 years on a house.

I was brought up by my Mum who was a single parent so I grew up with money being tight. This taught me to value the money I have, but not associate it with happiness.
Now we have a fairly decent income but I treasure the old style values. I hate consumerism, particularly branded clothes - do people really have such low self esteem that they feel they are only worth something if they wear some clothes emblazoned with some designer name. So my scores are:
Economy-5
Ecology- 5
Health-10
Individualism-10
feel good factor-100 -
I'm not Ol'Style:eek: There I've said it (although I've thought it for some time) Ol'Style has evolved over it's lifespan and I think some of the oldies will agree that when it first started it had more emphasis on saving money and much less thought for ecology, quality of food/life, animal husbandry and the like.
I buy my bread (cheaply), and growing up on a poultry farm taught me enough to know I don't want the little blighters pecking round me garden (why would I when I can buy ecomony eggs from Tesco!, and the last time I used vinegar was to sprinkle me chips. I'm not Ol'Style but I have always been frugal and that is for one reason only.
Economy 10Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
Thanks MATH, I was beginning to feel a bit antisocial
. I am economical because I want loadsa dosh in the bank (mine, not the retail magnates), and I want a comfortable life now, and for as long as DH and I are spared in our declining years.
I agree with the health/ecology thing in principle, but I'm afraid I don't do much in those directions. For example this afternoon I was peckish, so I counted the bananas in the fruit bowl, and there were just enough for DH to take his two to work each day next week - so I had a bag of Morrisons reduced to clear crisps instead.
I can't really expect him to cut back when he is working all hours, so I tend to live on rubbish until we share our evening meal.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Money - 10:)
The rest is down to having been brought up this way, and having - for 1970 anyway, unusually old parents - aged 33 - mum, and 55 - Dad. Therefore they had been through the war and experienced real struggle, and so were very resourceful. Dad was taught to hunt for food at a young age, kill rabbits etc, mum's dad had geese and pigs, they left school aged 15 (mum) and 14 (dad) As kids we grew all our own veg. Its what I know.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
I have done reading too!
