Ceramic vs. Induction Hob

I'm getting a new kitchen shortly. I've been gifted a decent ceramic hob (Bosch I think, but I haven't really looked) as it was surplus stock where one of my friends works, and they paid their employer £10 for it.

Without that I'd pay c.£360 for an induction hob that matches my other planned appliances.

I've always been a gas-is-best cook, but it's time to get into the 21st century and I've been so impressed by the induction hobs I've used in the past, and they've been incomparable to electric hobs I've used.

Are ceramic hobs any good? Or shall I just get an induction one and have a mildly awkward conversation with my friend?  I don't want to have a £10k kitchen I love, but a hob I hate (after all you use it every day) but on the other hand nothing can be better than free?

Had ceramic and now have induction, have had induction for 15 years now, it’s great, faster than gas.  Ceramic is just electric with glass or ceramic to make things look better, the cooking system is the same as using normal rings.

How many of your pans will you have to replace for the new system?

So long as the hobs are the same size switching over from ceramic to induction would be easy. So you could try the ceramic and switch if you don't like it.

I have an induction hob and unless I end up needing a pace-maker I don't think I will ever switch. Gas is good but induction cooks better and is safer (especially if you have children or inattentive people in the house). Gas is cheaper though, although if you factored in an annual safety check probably not (though I can't see many private homeowners doing this).

Please throw the ceramic hob and go for an Induction hob.
  • Do you love scrubbing and polishing burned-on foodstuffs every day? No, nor me.

There is nothing on this planet or beyond that would possess me to fit a ceramic hob.

Hate them hate them hate them.

Mum in law used to have one.

I agree.  A ceramic is never going to compare to gas, it's not even worth the effort.

Free is great, but you could not pay me any money to have ceramic (unless it paid to replace it with a new hob of my choice!)

Induction all day long, or gas.   Our 21 year old Prestige pans work on our induction hob!

I would much prefer an induction over ceramic any day. If there's a choice - induction.

We've got a ceramic hob (which I paid for). It's OK; it gets hot and cooks stuff and you can wipe/scrape off burnt on food or skin easily.  We had gas at our previous house which was also OK but very tedious to clean.  My dad has an induction hob which again is OK but needs special pans (I like these glass ones which won't work).  You can probably tell I don't care much about cookers.   I think you've already answered your own question though and you'll be dissppointed by anything less than a matching induction hob.  A few hundred quid on top of 12 grand isn't a lot.

We bought out ceramic cooker second hand - it was hardly used.  The sellers had moved to a house without gas and spend thousands on a new gas range, a conversion to calor gas and a gas store and pipework just to be able to cook on gas.

Induction hub every time, if you haven't compromised on kitchen don't do so on one of the main components.
