I used connector in place of the black part of the original fitting and thought I put wires in the corresponding positions

On your second photo the wires from the light aren't connected to anything.
Are you sure you should be fiddling with electrics?

Connect the two brown (from the ceiling) wires together. The blue (from the ceiling) needs to be connected to the blue flex to the light. The blue with red sleeve, connected to the brown flex.
The two bare copper wires should be sleeved with a bit of yellow/green sleeving and connected to the earth connection on the back of the light fitting.
As it currently stands, none of the wires are connected to anything. It would be prudent to call in an electrician.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

guess I guess I was over cautious about the wiring. All sorted now. Thanks

Have you connected the cpc since?
You aren't competent for this work - you need an Electrician to check what you've done. Ridiculous attempt.
  • Not connecting any of the wire to anything else is certainly cautious to say the least

I've just shown this to my DH who is an electrian. The expression on his face is priceless and suggests that you engage a competent person to ensure that your wiring is now correct and that those naked wires are now sleeved!

In that second picture it looks like a metal fitting and you have not connected the earth wire or sleeved the bare earth wires which should be connected together in the terminal block, that is dangerous get someone in who knows what they are doing.
