From a legal standpoint, the registered keeper is responsible for ensuring the vehicle is taxed. Therefore if the OP is the registered keeper, they are responsible for taxing the car.

I assume my insurance is invalid etc if I take it out on the road?  If they are in breach, can I cancel the contract?
The terms & conditions do not cover them defaulting except under ‘majeure’.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks JeanJean2 🤞
Insurance is not invalidated by the car not being taxed
