Low eaning

Hi all I'm new here so apologies if this is in the wrong place.
I'd like to know how people can get extra benefits when they are on a good wage and yet people on minimum wage and part time can't get help..
Ie  I work 12 hours on minimum wage in a retail store thats been open all through the pandemic. I have to do a few peopkes gardens to top up my wage aswell.  Oh and yes I report it to tax man.
My wife works 18 hours cleaning for local council and also not had time off through pandemic.
Yet we have to pay full council tax  full rent and no help...please can you explain where the system is fair when a person can get tax credits while earning £30k + a year..
Keith.

Not what this forum is for.
Have you run your circumstances through a benefit calculator?

It will totally depend on a person personal circumstances. How many children they have, they may have disabilities and claim disability benefits. There's a lot of things taken into consideration.
It's no longer possible to make a new claim for tax credits because Universal Credit has replaced this. Help with any rent will be paid as part of your UC maximum entitlement. If you have no dependent children then you won't have the work allowance which will mean that any earnings received during your assessment period will reduce your UC by 63%.
You will be excluded if you have savings/capital of more than £16,000.

    Keith.
Have you actually applied for Council Tax Reduction?

Please do put your details into a benefits calculator if you haven't already done so.  It may well be however that if you have no children and no health conditions that affect your ability to work that you might just be earning enough between you to not qualify for help.  I sympathise (my parents always struggled but always earned just too much for any meaningful help) but if you want the rules changed you have to take it up with your MP.  This board is here to help you get anything you're entitled to.

The other option is for one or both of you to try to find more work as both of you currently work part-time, but we know that's realistically easier said than done nowadays.
