You say you claim every year for these expenses .
Buy you only registered for self assessment to claim theses expenses.
When did you register for self assessment?
In December. The company I use put me in and out if self assessment after each tax refund.. why they do that is a completely seperate issue. It's to stop HMRC changes my tax codes etc
    Corrected that for you,

It's to stop HMRC changes my tax codes so I don't get all the tax relief due through my wages and the claims company can take a cut when they file my tax return.

Does anyone know how to withdraw a return? On the letter HMRC sent out it says to use their online tool to check of you need to file a return and that this tool will also tell you how to withdraw a return.

I've used the tool. It tells me I do not need to file a return but there is no further information or links relating to withdrawing a return.

I phoned HMRC and explained the whole situation. They sounded reasonable and understanding and said that the notice to file will be withdrawn and the penalty charges also withdrawn and that I would be removed from self assessment, as I do not in fact meet self assessment criteria. They also said I would get a letter to confirm all of this.

2 days later I received a self assessment statement. So I suppose this is a result of the phone call and me being removed form self assessment? The only issue with this is that it still says on this statement that there is a late filing penalty of £100 still and this must be paid by 21 April. This kind of makes matters even more confusing in a way.

Is there any way to actually check if I am still in self assessment? Again, their letter says to go to gov.uk, search for HMRC sign in and follow the on screen instructions. Again, no such option on their website seems to exist..
    Thanks.

What’s the date on the statement? Unlikely to reflect your telephone call in that timescale in my view.

Statements are run   off in advance of th date they are issued  so that statement would have ben run off for issue bfore your phonr call.

Its got to the point that I do not care about paying a £100 fine just to settle this. I would just like some sort of confirmation that I do not indeed need to file the return and therefore that I am not going to be chased up for it, or fine me whilst I am not even here for 6+ months.

    They should send confirmation.
