I would recommend looking into Vanguard funds for a diversified approach until they are able to choose how they want to allocate it
Vanguard offer many funds, some of which cover a specific sector and/or a specific geography.  Choosing a Vanguard fund does not in itself guarantee a diversified approach.

I would suggest involving the people whose money it will be in decisions, especially the 18 year old but also the younger.  If they come to meetings and feel they have had input into whether the money is invested in a fairly high risk, potentially high return way or kept safe with low risk and low return or how it is divided between different treatments they are less likely to resent the end result (after the unknown next few years) and it will be very useful for them to know how such discussions run and that it is OK to seek advice in learning later to take over management of it for themselves.
The trusts in my family are with IFAs, but with the beneficiaries' wishes taken into account.

Ok right. I am getting clearer and clearer on this. I do appreciate all the posts. As I re read initial post the good advice remains the same, it just has taken me a bit to arrive there too. Thank you. I guess if anyone would like to predict how this money should be invested that will give me sonething to compare to.
Although you have been getting some good pointers from the forum , you should still keep in mind that is an open forum and anyone can post . So perhaps not the best place to be getting specific recommendations for such a large sum of money, and in your own unique family situation/circumstances. In any case the 'best ' investment options is partly about opinion, and a lot of differing ones at that .
