need some advice

received a letter today from hmrc saying i have a tax credits overpayment from 5/4/2011 first time i have heard about it ,contacted them it was from a joint claim when i was with my ex husband we split up on the 12th april 2012 didnt no nothing about it even thou after talking to them today they said they sent a notice to pay on the 24th 2011 apparently its now with a debt mangement company who will recover the money I asked him why it has taken all this time to let me know he said that can happen but because i have had to claim for uc it has triggered the overpayment which is why i have been notified today , when me and ex split i was claiming tax credits but was never aware of any of this till i got letter today so im quite shocked can they do this after all this time its for 65.00 and they will also recover the same amount from my ex cos joint claims is recovered 50/50 any help appreciated

    Yes they can. Many owe thousands so good job yours is only £65. Are you sure they said it’s with a debt management company? If it’s going to deducted from your UC it may be with DWP Debt Management.

  • yes sorry it is dwp debt mangement ,not sure cos when i phoned them they said they had nothing on there system as of yet 
    will they take it in one go or in parts
