Options
The company I work for are forcing me to take 7 days holiday before I return to work in may. Are they allowed to do this?

    Yes they are.
Your employer can dictate when you can take holidays providing the give the requisite notice (2 times the holiday length)

    What's your objection?
  • Sally they can do it. Lots of people are not going to be able to take meaningful breaks this year.

How long is the “meaningful break” the OP has been on before they return to work in May? How are companies going to operate if everyone saves 12 months worth of holiday and all tries to use it in the last 6 months of the year?

Yes, can you imagine the bedlam if everyone had a full year of holidays to use in 6 months?

Including those who have been working all the way through, some of whom may resent furloughed colleagues returning to work then carrying their workload for them  while they head off on their saved holidays.
Furlough hasn’t been easy for some people, but the last year hasn’t been a barrel of laughs for the rest of us either.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I find it odd how many people in the same breath say 'a holiday during lockdown isn't a proper break' and that 'people on furlough have just had a long paid break'.
I've not been furloughed, no-one in my business has been furloughed, but I've seen how hard it has been on friends both mentally and financially.

Been even tougher if the employer goes under. Furlough provides no long term certainty. The fog has yet to lift.
