New Boiler

Options
As someone who knows nothing about gas installations I thought it might be worth getting feedback from any gas engineers that might be on here. Does the following quote I received seem a reasonable price? Also is it worth paying for the more expensive options?

Please see the boiler quote below.

1.)    A manual chemical clean through and inhibitor

2.)    A wireless programmable room thermostat

3.)    Local pipe work alteration up to 1 metre

4.)    Standard horizontal or vertical flue kit

5.)    Commissioning & testing of new boiler

Option 1:

Ideal Esprit Eco2 24 - £1650+vat (5 year warranty)

Option 2:

Glowworm Energy 25 - £1850+vat (7 year warranty)

Option 3:

Glowworm Energy 25 - £1995+vat (10 year warranty)

PLEASE NOTE

  • No decoration/boxing in works are included in the quote.
  • A gas safety certificate is included in the cost.
  • We would reuse the existing condensate & assume this is sound & in working order.
  • The current gas pipe is 15mm. This may require upgrading to 22mm. If so, this is not included in the cost.
  • The current boiler is a 28kw. We have quoted for a 25kw due to there being only one bathroom. We can quote for a higher kilowatt boiler is required.

The reason for quoting for a 25kw boiler is strange.
Far better to match the boiler to cold water flow rate rather than the number of bathrooms.

  • Seems a bit steep to me, though not miles out.  By comparison we had a more expensive boiler (+£100) fitted in a new location, needing about 5m of additional pipework, new flue through the wall, new pump (not a combi boiler), and new condensate pipe plus lagging for £1,924 inclusive (so about £1,600 exc VAT) with a 10 year warranty.

We did the usual 3 quotes and found a fair bit of variation, but the local water board came out cheapest and did a great job.

I think that’s expensive for budget boilers.
For instant option 3...for £2200 I could get a lot better boiler in 30kw and include a gas run.
  • Dlk, as said above, the suggestion to go down to 25kW is very strange. Even if you only have one bathroom or one shower, you want that to be a good powerful experience. I think you'd be silly to go less than 30kW.

The prices seem too high, especially considering all of the caveats and exclusions. Go for a reliable local company who don't pad out their quote with items that should be included as standard or use an online boiler company

Even the smallest of boilers (24KW) can handle up to 14 radiators so the hot water output of the boiler should be your main consideration unless you want a very powerful shower. For that, you'll just be paying a little more for a more powerful boiler. My advice would be to use a company like Boxt or Heatable and compare hot water outputs and decide that way. Gas pipework and 10 year warranties and better boilers as standard with both companies, plus you could even upgrade to a smart thermostat and still come in cheaper than the above quotes.
