colsten said:Final comment from me on this thread: For some people, £10K is their lifetime savings, to prop up a miserable state pension which might be the only income they have. It could also be the only savings a youngster has, say from an inheritance or a gift that they want/need to use towards their education. Or it could be all a jobless person who is sofa-surfing through the pandemic has. Or a single mum who just got out of an abusive relationship. Etc etc etc. So don't judge, and don't ridicule people who may not be as fortunate as you are.
The people who you should reserve your anger for are those who pop up on savings threads to point out that they have a better rate than the OP. They can be really annoying.0 -
I'm neither judging nor ridiculing anybody, and yes of course there will always be situations like you described. The point I'm trying to make is that those that are fortunate enough to have very large lump sums are - generally speaking - not those that really need to be sweating over the difference of £20 a month or year in interest. Now inflation on the other hand - that is something worth sweating over!
Yes, I get for some of us fortunate ones it's almost a hobby, chasing the best rates on a point of principle (or god forbid for bragging rights). As my handle suggests, I was in that camp. But there does come a point with rates as low as they are where you have to think, it's really not worth the effort any more. So I'll leave you on the ramparts and set up camp elsewhere.

Where can a 75 year old put £30000 which the kids are waiting to inherit because I can't spend it?
