Amazon - item doesn't arrive then no stock to replace.

I often order from Amazon, for myself and for elderly neighbours. Parcels have only failed to arrive on three occasions. On each of those occasions, there has been no stock to replace the goods ordered. I am wondering whether they were ever posted in the first place (ie they received an order after the last of their stock had gone out). Does anyone have a view on this? I know the Amazon system is clunky - there is no way for me to register that I have received items, when the deliverer does not - I have "late" items that arrived weeks ago.
