LYON & PROVENCE – THE ITINERARY

Day 1: Lyon
From Lyon airport, Viking will take you to their award-winning Longship where you can settle in, relax and explore the vibrant city.

Day 2: Lyon
Wake up in Lyon, a city renowned for its fabulous food, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your included tour will take you to the top of Fourvière Hill for amazing views of the city. Visit the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière and see the magnificent St. Jean Cathedral and the Palace of Justice.

Day 3: Lyon
On your final day in this city, enjoy an included drive through the rolling hills of the Beaujolais wine region to the Moulin-a-Vent – the windmill that lends its name to the famous wine. Visit a small museum to learn about the traditional art of winemaking and enjoy a wine tasting session.

Day 4: Vienne and Tournon
One of the oldest cities in France, the pretty, riverside city of Vienne was founded by the Romans under Pontius Pilate and became the empire’s main wine port on the Rhone. In the afternoon, take in the equally stunning scenery as you sail alongside picturesque vineyards to Tournon. 

Day 5: Tournon and Viviers
Sit back, relax and enjoy the breath-taking scenery on an included excursion on the Train de l’Ardeche. Then enjoy an evening walking tour through Viviers Old Town, with its enchanting medieval and Renaissance buildings. 

Day 6: Avignon
In the early 1300s, Avignon was the centre of the Roman Catholic world, and the extraordinary UNESCO-listed Palace of the Popes is the largest Gothic palace ever built. Your guided tour takes you through its palatial rooms, some of which feature frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti. 

Day 7: Arles
With its vibrant colours and clear light, the town beloved by Vincent van Gogh still attracts artists and visitors alike. You will visit the vast Les Arenes that is modelled on Rome’s Colosseum, as well as Romanesque monuments, such as the Church of Saint-Trophime.

Day 8: Avignon
After breakfast, Viking will take you to Marseille airport for your return flight to the UK.
