Car Insurance NCD Proof - Rejected?

I have been driving for 50yrs. I have 9 years NCD. No claims ever. That's on the yearly paperwork. I change every year.
I understand most companies regards 9 years as max for discounts, but let the forum know if you are able to reduce price. The world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon3 -
There is some logic that insurance companies only look back a certain number of years in assessing risk:
- Most people (OP excepted) don't have accurate records going back for ever, and companies also archive old records
- You may have been a most excellent driver in your 20's, but less capable after a certain age when reactions start to slow
- You may have been a "reckless yoof" a number of years back, but now mature & sensible and shouldn't be penalised for misdemeanours in the distant past.

I'm surprised you still had 8 years NCD following a presumably own fault accident in 2008. Most insurance companies, regardless of considerable NCD, would drop it to 3 years following an incident.
As long as you have a letter confirming it only dropped to 8 years then I guess you're good to go.0 -

An accident is still an accident from an underwriters perspective at a new insurer.daveyjp said:

But a no claims bonus is also still a no claims bonus.Thrugelmir said:

The 'Accident' in 2008 was believe it or not, a flood. I returned on the train from work, to find the road where I had parked my car completely flooded (next to the Calder River in West Yorkshire), still can't believe it to this day, all you could see was several car roofs! Total write off of course! The (Churchill) confirmation letter at that time states:Further to your request for evidence of NCD entitlement, we write to confirm the following:Name of P/H: ****Car Policy No: ****Car Reg: ****Cancellation Date of Policy: 01.03.08NCD Entitlement at Expiry: 8 years (65%) protectedDate of Claim: 21.01.08Type of Claim: AccidentNo Claim Discount Allowed/Disallowed: AllowedAlways take NCD 'protection' out too with every insurance I've had.My last 'Accident' prior to that, was 2005, head on collision from a car coming in the other direction on my side of the road
.All in all, I too think its strange them asking/rejecting, can only assume its my 15 years that thrown them, as counting up my last 7 years also has 9+ / 9 or more years since 2015, so I simply thought this was some kind of 'normal', and even stranger if they are not going to be bothered for raising it above 9+ anyways to my actual 21 years (and give me a further reduction indeed!). We'll see what they say when they receive my 2 days worth of work.0 -
I haven't found an insurer who discounts more than 9 years no matter how many years you can evidence.Always been told 9 years is maximum, even if there is drop down box on their site which lists 20 years or more.1

That doesn't make sense. If your last accident was in 2008 you can only have a maximum of 13 years NCD. You don't just add up all the years in which you didn't have accidents from the date you started driving. The NCD period is the period since the last accident, nothing more. I've been driving since 1974 and had only one accident at fault in that time. That doesn't mean I just deduct one year and claim 46 years No Claims.spaniel101 said:I have recently changed my Car Insurance Policy from Hastings Direct, to Sainsbury's. I am aware I had 'a lot' of years NCD, but admittedly have never concentrated per say on the exact number over recent years, for the very reason that insurance companies can't seem to make their minds up, given comparison sites recently (over the last 4/5 years in my experience), the maximum allowable for selection for NCD as being '9 years or more'. When I requested a quote from Sainsbury's Bank, I was pleasantly surprised to see a run of many years, I therefore 'plumped' for 15 years NCD not thinking too much about it. I duly uploaded my proof of NCD from Hastings to Sainsbury's online, which specifically states (and again has done for the last 4/5 years) with each change I have done, 9 years or more. All good.Sainsbury's have since informed me that the uploaded proof has been rejected. I telephoned their 'customer service' as requested to find out why yet the poor girl didn't sound a day over 17 bless her and self-admitted, reading from a script "...we require documentation that states your 15 years NCD". I therefore thanked her for her time but suggested it probably best I write to them as a) I don't have proof of NCD stating 15 years, for the very reason that insurance companies have only allowed 9 years or more and b) having looked back historically, I actually have 21 years NCD (last historic accident (fingers crossed!) was 2008, leaving '8 years NCD Allowed' - yes I still have that letter too, this rolled on over the years to 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, - insurance companies then changed their maximum allowable selections to 9 years or more from 2015/2016 onwards.I have spent this weekend photocopying all the years Car Insurance Policies going back to 2008 proving me as named driver showing my full NCD protection on all and I am composing a letter/spreadsheet to them, stating oops apologies its actually 21 years, not 15. Is this sensible/the correct course of action, otherwise I am at a loss of what else to say to them if they are not willing to accept the 9 years or more as it being ...more than 9 years, or is it just me? My gut feeling is that perhaps either an office junior has been vetting these or in the very least someone not that familiar with car insurance NCD protections/max allowable limitations (me neither it seems!), or maybe they are?

He had protected no claims discount so he didn't lose all (or any years) for that claim hence why he reckons he actually has 21 years (8 from that policy plus 13 years since with no claims)TELLIT01 said:

But as others have said there really isn't much point fussing about years beyond 9 years NCD. I think I once got a quote that shaved about £5 off going from 9 years up to the 12 years of no claims that we could evidenced. Decided life was too short to bother for that amount so just went with the 9 years from the previous insurer renewal letter (which these days, at least if dealing with the more reputable end of the market, is checked electronically so no need to submit anything then)2
