Repeat credit card transactions

I would like some help and advise, if possible, on repeat credit card transactions.

I recently paid for 1 months membership of Microsoft Xbox Live, the other options being 3 month or 12 month membership. Hidden in the terms and conditions, and only visable when scrolled down, was the fact that this was a repeat transaction.

Are there any rules or guidelines that a company must follow to indicate that a payment is a one off or a repeat transaction?

Thanks in advance

  • If it was hidden you would not have seen it.
It is not the company's fault if you chose not to scroll down and read the terms and conditions before you signed up.
What you have given them is a CPA - only Microsoft can canel future payments. Your credit card will not have any information on this.

Auto renewal is nothing uncommon nowadays, it's been around for years and I think you'll find that most subscription based products operate this way, particularly those which are internet based.
The rules are that the operating company must advise you of this fact. In this case they clearly have as you've read it for yourself in the T&C's.
As Ejones has said this payment method is known as a CPA. Until you contact Xbox and cancel they are fully entitled to carry on taking payments.

Morals are, read and understand the T&C's first and foremost and never use a credit card for subscription based payments.
  • If you do choose to cancel, send the letter recorded delivery and send a copy to your card company. If you wish to cancel it, you can (as long as there is no minimum contract term) but as you are relying on Microsoft to actually cancel it it would be a good idea to have some proof that your instructions have been received.

Always try to pay this sort of transaction by direct debit, as then you can cancel it yourself without involving the company you are paying (although obviously you should inform them)

Don't waste a stamp by copying it to your card company.
They will NOT be able to cancel any payment requested.
It is up to the OP to cancel with Microsoft/Xbox.
