Changing a GU10 bulb

Our bathroom has downlights fitted with GU10 bulbs.  For the first time in 10 years one of the bulbs has blown, and I find that I don't know how to remove the dud bulb.  I have no trouble with the kitchen lights, where it is just a matter of removing the circular clip.  The bathroom lights have no such clips.  They are the type which can be angled slightly - see pic.  I have tried using thumbs to push he bulb up and twist, but no joy.  Any ideas?

  • Assuming there's a teeny gap around the lamp's circumference - ie the lamp was placed in the holder after the holder was installed, and the bezel doesn't need removing - I suspect you need to look for a rubber sucker in your house. This is plopped on to the glass front, and gives it purchase as you push and turn anti.

pull the whole fitting out if you can't find a sucker cup, you'll be able to remove the bulb from the back. sometimes the suction cups don't work anyway if they are tight

And don't forget the most obvious thing of all.
Turn off the power at the consumer unit before fiddling about with the bulb.

When one goes the rest follow shortly thereafter. I found it easier to replace the fittings with LED.

Not in my experience.  We have 5 lamps in our bathroom for about 8 years.  1 went after about 2 years and the replacement has been fine ever since.  Another after about 4 and has been replaced by LED, but the other 3 are still fine.  The only mistake I made was getting cool white LED, not realising the old ones are warm white.

  • LEDs are great - I'd definitely replace any possible lamp with them as they blow. Yes, warm white... :-)

Also check - 'specially with smaller lamps like GU10s - that they are the same length.

My rubber sucker never worked well and then I lost it - I found putting on nitrile gloves works well as it gives my fingers all the friction they need.
