Suspicious phone calls

Options
I've had 2 calls with a recording saying their from HM revenue and there is a fraud case against me and to press 1 to discuss. I'm 74 and retired at 68. My earnings where with P.A Y.E.  I've hung up on both. Would like advice please.

    It's a scam

Phone up your telephone provider and ask for their call protect package to be turned on , BT and Plusnet definitely have this as a free add on.
    Can also be done online

If HMRC want to contact you, they will send you a letter.
These scammers will claim that you are about to be prosecuted for tax fraud, and the only way to prevent it is to immediately pay them lots of money.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Yes, absolute scam. I've had three of these all stating that if I don't press one a warrant will be issued for my immediate arrest. Just ignore and if you get any more just hang up and forget about it.

The BT "Caller Protect" service is a complete waste of time. My mum gets more "SPAM" calls now than before she subscribed. I have tried speaking to BT about it but they have fewer handlers available due to Covid.  :(

My phone has call guardian on it with caller display.
Numbers that I have not put in my contact list are intercepted and the caller has to state who  who they are. This is then announced and I then chose whether to accept the call or not or put it to the answering machine.
I can also block numbers such as international, mobile numbers, number withheld.
Scam calls went from several a day to none,  as scammers do not announce who they are but hang up.
With caller display you can see who is calling before you answer and could ignore unknown numbers or let it go to an answering machine .

Don't think you need any advice. What you did was the right thing.

Scam. You did the right thing.
However just as an aside- I feel like a stuck record when people say HMRC don’t phone/text/email people, they only send letters. This is not true!!!

Please elaborate to help others with communications from HMRC?

  • As a good rule of thumb,

    1. if an unknown caller rings you it’s probably a scam.
    2. If an unknown caller rings you and plays a recorded message it’s definitely a scam.
    3. If an unknown caller rings you and wants personal details or money paid immediately it’s also definitely a scam.

Alternately, now that you know it is definitely a scam you can safely press 1 and tell them to go ahead and prosecute you or cut you off or whatever the scam is.

    That's what I do :)
