why do I see a vast number of share trades for very small sums between maybe £1 to £12

I'm an amateur shares investor in my ISA. And one share, a penny stock on the AIM shares market is going up a lot in the last few days. I'm puzzled why there is a huge number of tiny trades from about £1 each to maybe £12 or so each. Even if these trades were made without paying a trading fee, they would be completely pointless, but there must be some point to them. Is it the market makers just using it as a mechanism to find price levels ?
